saying hello and welcome~
please introduce yourselves new ones, maybe include why you are wheat free- if you'd like-
and everyone else please say hi too- and list your favorite wheat free goodies!
so, hello!
i am Faern your moderator
i have been wheat free for some time now, i lost track in there
i do slip up a little bit, but that's ok! it's part of living! (until you feel horrible and remember why you have chosen a wheat free life- he he)
anyhow, i'd like to say that i am partial to pamela's chocolate chip cookies
and
also
a local company- monster muffins and stuff is wheat free and can be found in most health food stores (if you don't mind paying $3+ for a cookie!)
but as for food (rather than desert) i love making lentils and quinoa with a side chopped salad and scooping all that into lettuce cups or wrapping depending on the lettuce

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 10:00 AMHey there...wheat and dairy free because (even though i love them both) they make my sinus passages close down and my head fill with snot, which eventually leads to sinus infections. Yuck. I love quinoa pasta! Lentils and quinoa. Rye bread. Sunflower crackers.

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 11:09 AMHello All!
I am actually NOT wheat free, but my husband, diagnosed with CD this year is. I do most of the cooking, so here I am. I make a lot of stir-frys (sauteed sweet onions, green apple slices, apple cider, balsalmic vinegar and portabello mushrooms over jasmine rice is my latest random grabbing of ingredients concoction). We love salad as well, at least 15 different ingredients in every salad. My husband is partial to Pamela's also, and a local bakery that makes the most delectable GF pecan tassies. Oh, and Bard's Tale Beer, seriously one of the tastiest beers I've had yet.

Tue, January 8, 2008 - 11:34 AMGreetings and Salutations newcomers!
I've been on the wheat free wagon for.... um... 3 years now? I was diagnosed with endometriosis and when I cut the wheat out of my diet I found that my pain levels are reduced greatly.
I also found that I apparently go into a mild form of shock from eating wheat and it becomes difficult to breath.
I'm partial to the wheat free bagels found at whole foods, the arrow brand wheat free brownies and any cider in place of beer.
I feel like we have just started a wheat free anon here Faern.
Hi, my name is Bex and I'm a wheat free super freak...

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 10:04 PMHi, I'm Laurel and my daughter and I are gluten intolerant. We go through periods of compliance but know when we slip. We both love bread. We have crackers we like, but are still searching for decent bread. The biggest thing for us is pre planning our meals. We get so busy sometimes we let it slip. Right now we are working on an opera, and are there many hours with only short breaks. When we get done, we're famished and wound up and like to go hang and grab a bite. It ends up usually being something we shouldn't have. But we are getting better as we become more sensitive to the after affects of having gluten. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 5:45 AMHi Laurel, I think I've seen you one the FDHBD tribe before. If you can get it, I've have found that Gillian's bread is pretty good, comparatively speaking. It's usually in the freezer section of the natural food section of any grocery store and most natural health food stores carry it. Just pop it in the microwave for a minute and voila. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 2:50 AMFeb 7ish - 20ish - SF.
LA 1/28 until I go to SF.
As for eating on the run. It's so tricky. I've gotten in the habit of keeping emergency food I CAN eat in pretty much every bag or coat pocket that I own after having been caught out and about and starving with no food in sight. It's hard - I've become a bit neurotic about food and people don't always understand that you kinda have to be when you can't just go grab a sandwich like they can in a pinch.
I'm on the road and mostly live out of a bag currently so this is pretty much a constant concern for me.
My fave emergency pocket foods at present:
bars of whatever kind i can find - they are lame but they get the job done when you feel like you are going to fall over
dried dates - these have saved me so many times the last few weeks when my blood sugar has gotten dangerously low
almonds, brazil nuts
clementines - cuz they're in season, small and hold up well as you jostle about -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 10:30 AMi ronic- we'll have to wait till you get here cause i leave l.a. the day before you get home!
yeah, carrying food is something i have been slacking on-
i luckily have placed myself well in s.f.
every place i work there is a store nearby where i can at least get a synergy/kombucha drink and most likely some plantain chips.
i eat entirely too may tortilla chips in a pinch, which is really bad cause then i am dehydrated~ but water is more easily found in a bind, so i deal.
every time i pass a store with tangerines i buy a few... trader joes raw nut mix is something i really like to bring around...
i also leave tea and nuts at the yoga studios so when i come round again there is most likely something i can have in the early AM (i go to work at the crackass of dawn sometimes and stores aren't open yet) -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 10:44 AMof course you leave the day before i get back.
bloody hell, ain't that always the way? geesh.
yeah - a smoothie or water or peppermint tea sometimes help in a bind but even then.
yeah - the chip does in a pinch - or the other chip (fried potato) but i've gone through enough extended periods of eating nothing but friend potatoes to know that it only makes you feel like ass after enough days in a row of it. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 8:30 PMI started to realise that I may have a wheat allergy around the time I had my appendix removed a couple of years ago. Anything containing wheat was really hard on my system after my surgery. At first I tried to cut down on my wheat intake but last summer I took the plunge to cut out wheat entirely. Almost immediately my skin cleared up (no more dry, flaky areas on my cheeks), my energy shifted from somewhat sluggish to good-to-go, my mood improved and some digestive issues cleared up. In the last 3-4 months, I've cut out other glutens as well and feel even better. When I do "cheat" now, I start to itch almost immediately and my cheeks begin to redden.
My favorite gluten-free baked goods are from Mariposa Bakery - they stock their brownies, pies and other goods at local health foods stores and also have a cafe open in the Temescal district (www.mariposabakery.com). I'm partial to the rice pasta at Trader Joe's and have become a fan of quinoa. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 11:10 PMHello everybody. I'm Sasha and I've been wheat free/ gluten free for 2 years. My maternal Gma is Celiac, and my Father has 2 celiac uncles, and wheat allergy problems himself. It was pretty easy for me to self diagnose.
I just started working at a gluten free bakery in Oakland, called Cafe Mariposa, so my new favorite treat is their gluten free pizza. Also, my boyfriend's Mother just brought me gluten free pita breads from Israel. Mmmm, so good. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 1:29 PMhi, i am mostly wheatfree as i am lucky to not be allergic, just sensitive to too much gluten. i have eczema that is worsened by certain foods and have had issues of candida over the years. i feel so much better when i don't eat wheat. my energy is up and so is my immune system. i've also cut out sugar and most sweets. doing this has helped me keep my weight down and kept me from a cycle of feeling "hypoglycemic" and then overeating. i really think that refined foods have a drug-like effect on the system and make you just want more and more and never feeling satisfied. at work the other day i ate a mini cinnamon roll and it was like a downward spiral into wanting to eat the whole box. it was a bizarre feeling as i've been wheatfree and low-sweets for the last 2 months and not feeling overpowered by food at all. on the subject of weight loss, i really think that will power is only part of the solution. the food that is making people fat is also addictive! it's also interesting to me that so many people are senstive or allergic to wheat lately. maybe more people are noticing it and linking it to wheat, but i have a feeling that it's environmental pollution that is making more and more people oversensitive and allergic to common allergens. -

Re: hey everyone! lots of new people in this tribe!
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:51 PMHi, I'm new to the tribe and the no wheat thing.
I have IBS and intestinal issues that have pretty much been under control since I became vegan and cut out dairy. But everytime I eat wheat I have bloating and intestinal cramps an low energy.
I totally agree with the woman above me about addictive foods. There is no satiating factor with wheat for me, even though it makes me feel bad. Is it common to crave foods that you are allergic to?
I have been turning to rice krispies and nature valley bars when I am craving something bready. I am still struggling with my resolve to cut out wheat completely though. The cravings are a bitch
