Newbie to Wheat-Free

topic posted Thu, April 12, 2007 - 6:15 AM by  Jane
I'm new to tribe and to living wheat-free. This is actually day one!

I'm going wheat free (and sugar free) mainly because I'm diabetic and wheat really raises my blood sugar. More so than anything else, other than simple sugars.

I also have noticed that after I eat a large amount of wheat products, I feel lightheaded, cloudy-headed, forgetful, very tired, headache, sinus allergies, very sleepy and depressed. I don't sleep well and the next morning I have a terrible "food hangover" with nausea, dizziness...basically all the classic alcohol hangover symptoms.

Does anyone else shows these symptoms? I also feel as though I'm addicted, even though it makes me feel bad. I tell my husband that wheat and sugar are MY herion.

Anyone else feel like this? Or am I completely crazy?

No. You aren't completely crazy at all.

Wheat is a hard one to kick. Many of us grow up eating it, it's in EVERYTHING! It took me awhile to really get into the wheat free lifestyle and find foods that I like even more than wheatfilled ones.

As for symptoms, I get similar ones but add to that shortness of breath/ difficulty breathing because my stomach bloats to such an extent that it pushes on my lungs so I can't use them to their full capacity. Then it just hurts real bad and intense cramping follows.

Good luck with your transition - this tribe has been a life saver for me on my journey into wheatfreedom. Good place to ask questions and share frustrations or yummy wheat free stuff you discover. Welcome to the club.

    I am a Wheat-free newbie too.

Until I was told recently by my doc that wheat was not my friend I thought I was crazy. I had the same symptoms you have after eating wheat and never knew what the problem was. Because wheat is in almost everything I was always feeling sick after eating and was thinking it was a problem with solid foods.

I am definitely addicted to wheat....even though it makes me feel like hell. LOL!

Life after wheat is much better :)

You just have to start thinking more in terms of non-European cuisines in which other grains are featured more~Middle Eastern, Asian, African, South American, Pacific Islands, etc...

Forget the pasta! Pass me the sticky rice!

I'm grateful that I can still eat so many of the foods that I love: Indian, some Mexican (I need to be specific about the tortillas), certain Thai dishes (curry!), Vietnamese, and others... if I had to give up all Indian food, I think I would have to hurt someone. hehe... :)

Here, here! If I couldn't have my curry or hummus...it'd be bad bad times.

I'm a newbie too (1 month in on a Gluten-Free diet) and I'd be up the proverbial creek if I wasn't already in love with Middle Eastern, Indian, Mexican, etc. dishes and recipes. Growing up in the near-south my childhood comfort foods won't work any more (chicken and dumplings, biscuits and gravy...*weep*) but luckily I've got a more 'diversified palate' than most of my family so I'm a little more comfortable than if I'd had to start this diet say...10 years ago.

your symptoms make sense, especially since you are diabetic

i have some of those, but it's hard to tell for me between these wheat symptoms and my hypoglycenia sometimes.... unless i have been really strict

    Thanks for the warm welcomes.

I'm still learning (and struggling) with going wheat-free. But I've noticed over the past week or so that I only have my "food hangovers" when I've eaten wheat. Not so much sugar. But I am still working on being sugar-free too.

      it's true.
wheat usually causes the food hangover for me, if i have too much sugar i have a different reaction... and if i have been drinking alcohol it's a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different response to the sugar.

what i was told in regards to the sugar/wheat free deal is that what i am looking for is the hypoglycemic signs to come back- when i have been eating too much sugar the nausia and headaches go away and i forget to eat. in that situation if i choose to eat (there is a lot of weakness in regards to this) something i shouldn't because i am not thinking right the reactions are stronger. sounds way weird, but somehow these two things go hand in hand for me. but if i am ballanced, very careful about the wheat and have a little sugar i am ok. it's like some kind of sling shot, not sure which is the rubber band and which is the rock.....
