WHEAT FREE OATMEAL

I don't mean to step on any toes and I mistitled the previous post (which I have deleted). However, I am hoping to continue the oatmeal discussion because of conflicting "expert" advice I have heard.

I have been told that oats were bad because they either are "processed" in facilities that also process WHEAT, and because they themselves are close enough to WHEAT to have adverse affects on people sensitive to wheat. I have also heard that the latter is not true, and oats are only "bad" because of the former.

Some responses from the previous post indicated that oats aren't a bad thing? So it is possible that info on oats being similar enough to wheat to cause problems is untrue? I guess this could all depend on your level of sensitivity to wheat.

    You didn't have to delete that thread. I think it was good to make the distinction between "wheat free" and "gluten free," but the thread itself was evolving with different opinions, so it was a fine thread.

    But to clarify, there are 5 (or 6) glutenous grains...that is types of grain that contain gluten. So people who are intolerant of gluten must avoid ALL of these grains. This tribe is specifically for people who cannot eat wheat. Most of us CAN eat the others. Some fall somewhere in the middle. Of the glutenous grains, oats seem to be tolerated the best and by the most people. So in order of least tolerated to most tolerated (in general), the glutenous grains are:

    Wheat
    Kamut (unhybridized wheat)
    Spelt
    Barley
    Rye
    Oats

    I personally am fine with ALL of those BUT wheat.

    As for oatmeal, I can eat any oatmeal. My wheat sensitivity is not so bad that I have to avoid things processed in a plant that also processes wheat. Actually, I can consume small amounts of wheat (such as that in soy sauce or vinegar). But in general, the more I avoid wheat, the better I do.

    But Oats, Oats are ALWAYS my friends. :)

    there is gluten in oats, its a low quantity from what i understand.
    i didn't thing they were close in form, the two grains, b/c my naturopath told me oats were a must for me ~

    i am looking for a gluten levels chart online but am having trouble locating it.
    but in doing that i did see part of an article saying that american oats are the ones processed in questionable facilities, so maybe find irish made oats? or ones that say not made in a facility that processes wheat~ which is what i assume the gluten free oats are~ but i wonder how they remove the gluten in the oat, or if they do, or if it's just a lot lower than we thunk?

    the question really is whether or not full gluten free is what you are looking for, b/c oats themselves do have some gluten, more than rye from what i remember from the chart i can't find now~

      No, I won't delete, I promise! I figured that because this is a WF not a GF tribe, it would be better to delete the incorrect thread. I am so used to just to seeing GF to represent both WF & GF that they are interchangeable in my mind.

      I actually have a gluten level chart in my apt somewhere, I think. I bet if your naturopath is is saying oats are a must for you, then they probably aren't too similar to wheat to cause problems. Although, you bring up a good point about the different types of oats. Perhaps the people who told me oats were bad because they are too close to wheat are actually confusing the wheat vs gluten issue. Wheat has gluten, but not all gluten is just in wheat!

        it's similar to the peanut thing.
        the american roasting process is the whole reason nuts get a bad wrap~
        if you get chinese peanuts or ones made the chinese way (boiled i think, not sure), or ones unroasted, the oils in them have not turned into the "bad" oils due to the temp. used to "process" them.
        but then again, raw peanut butter tastes better anyways~
