New here!

topic posted Tue, March 4, 2008 - 3:36 PM by  Samantha
Hi everyone. I went wheat-free for a month hoping it would help my endometriosis & some stomach problems I seemed to be having when I ate bread & pasta. It didn't help with the endo but I've been back on wheat for two days & I'm freaking exhausted & depressed. It seems so instant so I'm blaming the wheat. I guess I'm going back to being (at least mostly) wheat free.

I found this great recipe blog through the vegetarian tribe here. It's all meat-free, gluten-free stuff. Even if you eat meat you could probably adapt the recipes. glutenfreehippie.blogspot.com/ Some of it doesn't look great but some looks delicious.

Maybe you're thinking of Asharah. We're friends in real life but I didn't realize she was in here until I just joined. Heh.

Well, I'm going back off wheat so we'll see what the cumulative effects are. (As soon as I finish these Girl Scout cookies!)

F'ing girl scouts! Two of my friends had to physically drag me past their table this weekend. (Actually, my allergy has gotten bad enough that I still have most of a box of thin mints from LAST YEAR in my freezer.)

I think the food item I miss the most is Girl Scout cookies... I can live without everything else, but GS cookies...? I can't even think about them - it makes me so sad that I can't have them anymore!!

That would be me! I went wheat free almost 3 years ago because of endo.

I eliminated the following foods for a month:

      wheat
      sugar
      soy
      dairy
      caffeine

I switched to a diet of lots of raw foods and flax oil and then after a month slowly started to reintroduce these items to see how they made me feel.

I learned that I have to limit my intake on all of them, especially soy and dairy - I had to eliminate wheat completely and after a few months on my new diet my pain levels were WAY lower and my quality of life WAY better.

It ain't an easy transition at all but life is so much better now that I have. Happy to chat about this stuff anytime, it took me years to figure this stuff out and it wasn't always easy or fun.

Oy, no soy! I'm a vegetarian so much of my protein intake is soy. I have heard it can effect estrogen levels, though. Well, one thing at a time for me! :-)

Yeah exactly - soy is very high in estrogen, as are yams.

Endo is partly caused by hormonal unbalance in your body so eating something very high in estrogen doesn't help to create a balance - it continues to throw it off.

I had to give up soy milk and tofu - they are only occasional treats now because I found when I eat too much soy the endo is really bad.

mmm, i have way to much estrogen in my body- i am glad i don't like soy~
i wonder if that applies to edamame- boy that sounds like a dumb question

I wonder, though, why if soy raises estrogen levels & it's recommended to avoid those foods if you have endo, they DO like to put people on birth control pills, which also raise estrogen levels, to help with endo?

From what I've read, the whole soy/estrogen thing is mostly bunk. But there are some legit studies that say too much soy can affect your thyroid (and other legit studies which say that's a load). Better safe than sorry, when my thyroid started to show signs of wear, doc told me to cut down on my soy (I was eating it like 3 times a day and cut to a couple times a week) and viola, my thyroid perked up a bit over a few months. So based on my sample of one, yeah, too much soy (or anything else, for that matter) is no good. But unless you're allergic or otherwise sensitive, moderation is probably fine.

There are a few of us, I think.... I definitely notice a positive difference in my overall health without eating wheat. :)

It all tasted delicious! The stuff on my blog, that is. :) (You were probably thinking the puddin' pie didn't look too good... the color wasn't very aesthetically pleasing, but very tasty nonetheless.) Thanks for mentioning it, either way. :P

    Welcome to the tribe!

    Blessings,

I'm going to try the marmalade-glazed tofu tonight!

*blush* Yes, it was the pudding I was suspicious of! Ha! I did a raw diet a while ago & went to some raw pot lucks & some of the desserts were less than stellar to say the least. I suppose I've been scarred by it! :-)

Oh and Lyra, i have to say that I have been looking forward to the tofu dish for a couple of weeks since I found your blog!

That's so surprising because those are my favorite things to prepare raw! I'm down for pretty much anything sweet if it's got raw fruit in it, though. :)

and YAY for the tofu! I must say that that was quite fun to make. Sooo simple (for all the time it takes) and delicious! I really should make more main courses. I tend not to post them because I cook dinners at like 7-8pm so there's no good light for photography. :\ Oh well.

Hope you enjoy the tofu as much as I did. :D
