My friends call me Mouse. I'm trying to decide if I might be intolerant to wheat. Do any of these sound familiar? muscle cramps, gas, bad breath, unexplained depression, cry itchy skin, bloating, difficulty concentrating, sinus issues, back pain. blah blah blah. I was wheat free for a few weeks and felt better. went off it and the more I eat the more I wander around the house looking for salty vinegary things to chew on. I'm more restless and since when do you need to stretch before getting off the couch so you don't pull a muscle? I work out every week and I belly dance so I can't be in this bad of shape

  • what about dairy?
that's another hard one that gets mixed up with the wheat thing
    • not sure bout dairy. The only thing I've noticed with it is that I get really phlegmy after I eat sometimes. It's either spicy stuff or cheese, haven't narrowed it down. But it feels like I'm gonna choke on the slime. and there have been many times I was nervous I might be pregnant because of unexplained nausea. If I get too empty I feel like I'm gonna turn inside out and get all crampy.
      • ok-
if you get phemmy from dairy that may be something to look at-
i get cold symptoms when i eat wheat, fyi-
i had to get rid of them both- if you feel like you are gagging- you should pay attention to exactly what you are eating at that point- you may be ok- with cheese and yogurt- but not milk and ice cream (which would tell me you could be lactose cause they add that in to frozen yogurt and ice creams to make them fluffy and creamy)
spicy stuff would clear your sinusses- which may feel like a post nasal drip- shouldn't feel the same.
        are you hypoglycemic?
that last sentence was a hint in that direction- causes severe nausea- like i have right now- shit- how long has it been since i have eaten? ok- i have to eat something- it has been too long- i have to eat a little something every 4 hours so that i don't crash (i am hypoglycemic)
i hope i am helping and not babbling too much.................
        • i have pretty bad nasal allergies so post nasal drip is normal. but after I eat sometimes it feels extra thick like it's hanging onto my tonsils and throat and i have to hack it up --nice. probably the hot peppers. I'm eating cheese right now and not noticing much difference. I've been worried about hypoglycemia. My dad is diabetic. I had one gal notice that I'm a complete raging space cadet right before I eat. extra hyper. and if i don't eat I get light headed and shaky.
          • self discovery and avoidance and MS

I'm 30 years old and haven't died yet from anything I've eaten. So I'm starting with the one thing. I'll cut out the wheat and see how it goes. I love cheese and sour cream so I'm not willing yet to give those up. I'm kinda looking forward to getting back on the no wheat diet because I discovered all kinds of new things I'd never tried before. Ginger cookies and cornbread crackers are awesome. There are so many foods I've never eaten before I figure what the hell, this would be a good time to have them. The big issue for me here is that my mom has fibromyalgia and MS. There is a wheat connection. I'm trying to convince her to go on the diet too to see if she feels any better. A lot of what's bugging me sounds an awful lot like fibro, so if this staves it off, it's soooo worth it.

              hey Mouse..
I have the most severe wheat allergie that I've heard off....
and i do have to be cafeful with dairy.. but it is "just because" if I eat it regulary I also have various phlem issues.. so I just supplement with soy...

but many health problems are primarily from food intolerance.. crones is a big one also IBS.. blows my mind that Dr.s wont look futher into it... they don't make as much money if your not taking meds!!!

interesting about the ms and fibromyalgia connection. i figured out the wheat intolerance when i was trying to deal with my raging endometriosis. there is a definite connection with that too. the western drs are so quick to put you on some stupid drug or hormone. i had to figure this stuff out on my own. i found a great book that helped and walked through how to do the elimation of stuff. i've mentioned it to my dr more than once - especially since it worked and my quality of life has greatly improved since i made the changes. you'd think the dr would be more interested than they seem to be in it.

cornbread crackers sound good. i'm sick of rye and rice crisps. i'll have to see if i can find those.
          • messed up I think

crap. I couldn't stand it. I HAd to have a piece of the cake with strawberry topping in the break room. and now i have a headache and my mouth feels a bit weird. maybe i burnt myself on my soup earlier. I don't know. but I'm yawning, my ears are ringing and i just tooted. damn it all.
      • i get incredibly crampy when i eat wheat. it hurts like hell. it is even worse if i am on my cycle. it can be so bad that i can't get up and move around for over a week at a time - since i gave it up, my periods are only 'bad' for a day or two instead of 2 weeks. i can tell ya within 20 minutes if i've had wheat in something by accident. i bloat up and the cramps come right away.

that totally makes sense about the lactose thing too. i can't drink milk or eat ice cream but a little bit of yogurt or cheese seem to be okay. goat and sheep are better for me than the cow stuff though. i get completely snotty and full of phlegm if i have too much dairy too.

i have to eat every few hours too. at least a little something or i feel incredibly sick.

the easiest way to figure out the wheat intolerance is to eliminate it completely from your diet for a month. you might also take the opportunity to get rid of some of the other things you might be questionning. after the month passes, slowly start to re-introduce the stuff you have been avoiding. do them one at a time or one per meal so you can take the time to really pay attention to how you feel and how your body reacts after having stuff. it is hard at first but once you realize how crappy stuff you have been eating makes you feel, the motivation is there to avoid that stuff.

        good luck!
        • wait wait-
but with dairy you have to be careful-
that's what happened to me- i took it out for a while (the wheat too) while i was cleansing with the assistance of a naturopath- she thought i was already almost dairy free, and didn't give me this warning b/c of that... if you feel like you may be lactose intollerant - or on the way there- do not remove dairy completely from your diet unless you will be ok with it gone forever- i know that sounds dramatic- but i didn't know and i ate some frozen yogurt- a lot of it- and low and behold i was awake all night (probably should have gone to the emergency room) my chest closed in around my heart- the lungs is where you process the lactose and when you can't the lungs get full and swell constricting the heart-
          this is SEVERE lactose intollerance
i had episodes in the past- but didn't realize what it was until this most severe reaction, all b/c i removed dairy completely from my diet for a couple months- so i know my case is the most severe, but from my experience- a little dairy goes a long way- if you keep a little in your diet the natural lactose you aren't producing anymore (we only produce when we are babies and pregnant) wont be completely obliterated.
oh- if you are lactose intollerant and you are pregnant- you can eat dairy b/c the enzyme is present in the system that you need...
          • oh- by the way- i love not having dairy in my diet-
it's just really scary when you get some by accident-
or when you get lied too, as i have- they don't understand unless you tell them you will end up in the emergency from one shred of cheese- and even then i check every little thing on my plate, unfortunately so
            • that's for damn sure.......... people seem to really like to somehow ignore that whole "no cheese/cream/milk/whatever" request. I can't tell you how many times they'd mess that one up on me when I used to try being vegan. I had to give up! A friend of mine told me that was the secret-- tell them you're allergic. I never did but it sucks you have to be so adamant!!!!
