Wheat Free in Europe?

topic posted Wed, May 30, 2007 - 6:13 PM by  offlinebex
Has anyone done any traveling in Europe and managed to survive a la wheat free?

I'm Spain and UK bound this summer and not sure how I'm going to make it. Last time I traveled abroad I lived off bread as my main (cheap) staple.

Ideas?

i haven't left the continental u.s. cept for the mexico area and canada...

i do believe you should bring a collection of cliff bars and rice noodle packets- but also see what the rules are for travelling with foods.
save money for veggies and be a pain and ask what's in stuff.
you will have to eat a lot of roots, so try as hard as you can to find some greens
and search on tribe for people in the area you are going.
if you go to ireland, you can eat shepherd's pie i believe- but again- ask what's in it, might come with breadcrumbs on top.

but in spain, things should be a whole lot easier!
really ... easier to find vegetables s well i bet easier to find stuff to eat in regular food places

    just my two cents

isn't there a traveling while gluten free tribe?

      yeah...

after traveling to colorado this last week i realized that i might have to pack some food.

am thinking ramen but with rice noodles, maybe a box or two of annie's wheat free mac n cheese and a box of rye crisps or something for bready like stuff...

i wish i spoke spanish... maybe i should make a card before i leave with info about it in spanish with help from someone who speaks so i can just show the card and get the si or non...

traveling with food just seems like a pain but... i don't want to starve and knowing that i'll be camping remotely for at least a week means i gotta have some sort of plan...

still open to ideas - i don't leave until july 1.

          true dat.

last time i was in the uk i remember food being less that ideal...

funny though - the book i read that taught me i'm wheat intolerant is written by a british woman.

i'm not surprised at all about that actually.
i know there are tons of people out there that have this problem and don't know it - and i would assume that the higher the concentration of wheaty foods the higher the concentration of intollerance that goes undisclosed... but that's just an opinion i have. when there is no other option, then how would you know what the hell the problem is?

can you imagine the trouble she has going out to eat?

There is a fair bit of GF food available in grocery stores in europe. You can see the list of brands under vendor directory at gfmall.com

Their standard for GF is different and they sell baked goods that contain only wheat starch in small quantities which is OK for most.

It'll be easier if you figure out some of the words in spanish etc but I assume they're labelled multilingually. (Write me offline if you want some help translating french or spanish).

There's infinitely more awareness of gluten allergies in europe particularly in italy and the UK. In Italy, all children are tested in middle school now.

              good luck
